I'm about to put into production a site that uses mod_rewrite compiled
into
apache to make specific php generated pages look static to search
engines.
http://www.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html
Eg you can have apache internally convert
http://site/catalogue/categoryN.html
to
http://site/category.php?id=N
(where N is some regular expression, in this case probably a number)
I like this approach as it enables you to have multiple different
'static' pages
based upon a variable passed through the html file name.
Using this you can create specific static 'views' into your content that
you
think search engines should index, while still allowing more dynamic
access
via the original php files. Thus you can have the content indexed,
without
spamming the search engine.

PS. I think I noticed an extra http header being returned with PHP
generated
pages the other day, it may also be worth looking into killing that too.
