Hi Rich, et. al.
I'm still interested in the PHP developers point of view; regarding building
in support for server-side cursors.
The database vendors proprietary handling of these concepts should not be an
issue - that is the whole point of ODBC. If the drivers implement ODBC
properly, then ODBC will enforce functionality onto the back end database.
From where I sit, PHP should support the following cursor models - with the
exception of the first one, these models all support foward and backward
stepping on the resultset.
Foward Only (uni-directional)
Keyset Driven Cursor (Resultset size is fixed and determined when keyset is
built)
Static Cursor (Snapshot of complete result set is taken when the cursor is
opened => Resultset cache can be very large)
Dynamic Cursor (Data appears to be dynamic, but absolute row positions
cannot be used due to high sensitivity)
Mixed Mode Cursor (Combination of keyset driven and dynamic cursor. Keyset
refreshed whenever requested rowset lies partly or wholly outside current
keyset)
Since these can be implemented in databases with the proper ODBC API calls,
is there any way to do so in PHP or are there any plans to support this?
Alternatively, what would it take to exend PHP via C such as you have done,
to get this functionality? Is that even possible since this is server-side?
Best regards,
Andrew
