One thing Andrei forgot to mention is that you'll be able to differentiate between NULL values and empty values by using the new PHP 4.0 equality operator === which checks for both value and type equality like this: If ($result === NULL) { /* Won't catch empty values "" */ } At 10:48 AM 5/12/00 -0500, Andrei Zmievski wrote:
I don't remember if this was discussed before or not, but I just discovered that a select which may potentially have NULL results in some rows will not be fully returned by mysql_fetch_array(). NULL results just disappear. I think they should be returned as PHP's NULL values. We'd like to make a change where the NULL values would be returned as part of the array. However, this may potentially break some scripts which depend on not having NULL values in the returned arrays. But since the same script can receive "" (empty) value from the database and the difference between NULL and "" is not that great, we feel that the consequences will be minimal. Unless we receive lots of strenuous objections to this, we'll implement the change before PHP 4 release. -Andrei * We reason deeply, when we forcibly feel. * -- PHP 4.0 Beta Mailing List <http://www.php.net/version4/> To unsubscribe, e-mail: php4beta-unsubscribe@lists.php.net For additional commands, e-mail: php4beta-help@lists.php.net To contact the list administrators, e-mail: php4beta-admin@lists.php.net
