its not compiling libphp4.so!

Hello.... (this isn't long, but detailed)
I am running:
kernel 2.2.13, apache 1.3.12, php 4.0 May 22 release
current setup:
apache:
./configure --with-layout=my_layout --with-module=so
make WORKS
make install WORKS
php:
./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs=/var/lib/apache/sbin/apxs
make WORKS
make install right at the end of the install, "apxs" says that
i am missing "libphp4.so" and it can't copy it! all i see in
"/opt/php-4.0.0/modules" is "libphp4.a" and "libphp4.la" Therefore,
it
never had been compiled........ there is no sign of error durring
"make", only durring "apxs". I can run the "php" executable and run
scripts that way, but I have no Apache module to spaek of.
ALL help would be excellent! :)
