Usually this means that the config.m4 file (in ext/informix) should
contain the following at some point :
EXTRA_LIBS += -lyourlibrary
After modifying config.m4 you need to run "./buildconf" at the root
of the PHP directory. This gathers configuration information from all
extensions present and injects it into the main configure script; you
then run "configure --with-informix" (or whatever your favorite
config command is) then make/make install once more. Make install
should patch the Makefile in the Apache tree appropriately.
Autoconf and automake are great tools which simplify distributing
source packages a lot, but sometimes the complexity they hide comes
back to haunt you...
