one thing i would put on the beta page is a BIG note about the change in .htaccess and apache config parameters. i had to go guess that
      php3_include_path ./:/usr/local/libphp
should now be:
      php_value include_path ./:/usr/local/libphp
and since apache was croaking on the previous one, i would assume most people would be fairly frustrated. the extended problem is that php3 & php4 don't appear to play together. so you have to commit to setting up a separate site (if you use have those pesky php3_* configuration options in your .htaccess files...) You can use <ifmodule mod_php3.c>...</ifmodule> blocks if you are compiling statically. Don't think that works for DSO's though. But, yes, agreed, the fact that they don't play together makes transitioning difficult.
It works fine with DSOs. And just to state that there's no consensus, I disagree that being unable to run both versions simultaneously makes transition difficult, once we provide the correct documentation and tools. Choosing not to make both versions run concurrently wasn't an arbitrary decision, but a purely technical one. There's no way to make it happen without seriously messing up the PHP distribution, and there's no real reason to do it either.
