You can use <ifmodule mod_php3.c>...</ifmodule> blocks if you are compiling statically. Don't think that works for DSO's
though. But,
yes, agreed, the fact that they don't play together makes

It works fine with DSOs. And just to state that there's no consensus, I disagree that being unable to run both versions simultaneously makes transition difficult, once we provide the correct documentation and tools. Choosing not to make both versions run concurrently wasn't an arbitrary decision, but a purely technical one. There's no way to make it happen without seriously messing up the PHP distribution, and there's no real reason to do it either. actually - the problem i had earlier on was in linking both php3 and php4 into the same apache executable - there appeared to be some overlapped symbols...
I didn't mean that it was possible to run both versions simultaneously on the same server; It isn't, and it's not going to change... What I was saying is that once we release clear transition instructions and tools that would automate the conversion of your .conf and .htaccess files for PHP 4.0 compatibility, this is a non issue. If you still feel you need both versions, you can use PHP 4.0 as a module and PHP 3.0 as a CGI (or vice versa). Zeev
