sessions (cookies vs post)

I have used the session module for starting a sessions, and registering and
unregistering variables, it works great, but when i shut cookies off it
doesn't use post to pass the session id along like phplib6.1 did, am i
missing something, or is the sessions module in php4 just cookie based?

ps the phplib6.1 works fine in php4 i just thought i'd try the new features :)
