Nothing quite makes sense with this business - the only thing you can say for sure is that we can't really tell. Apache's DSO build process used an illegitimate way of generating the dynamic modules. When Sascha Schumann consulted the binutils maintainer what may be the problem, he pretty much got fever when he saw what Apache was using to generate dynamic modules. The problem is that Apache was using a build process that may somehow end up working, but isn't necessarily supposed to work. Something in PHP 3.0.9 may have gotten it to work, but there was no such luck with 3.0.11 or 4.0. It's pure coincidence. Static modules perform significantly quicker than dynamic modules - often by 10% to 20% quicker. Well, that is good news if it solves my problem! However does it make sense that installing 3.0.9 with apxs causes no difficulties if indeed this is the root of the problem with V4?This is strange though. I built it the same way I did for 3.0.9, which was using apxs. Version 3.0.9 works flawlessly. I had similar problems with 3.0.11 but never investigated whether it was includes that caused the failures, I just went back to 3.0.9. As mentioned by another person the "document contains no error message" is because of a segfault as evident in the Apache error log. What do I need to do to build as a static module and what effect (if any) does that have on features and performance?
