my company runs a very very large php site called homepoint.com with (currently) 4 subsites underneath each with a unique and feel. the entire site is mostly self creating via domain name detection. i tried out beta 1 and didn't see tremendous increases in performance or decreases in CPU time (both or either are a win in my book concerning the cpu hit i'm taking now). this may be due partly do to my script complexity, partly due to the robustmess of my libraries, and partly due to number of requires/includes necessary to pull this off (granted this was a test environment too, not a fully abused production environment). in an effort to get more juice out of the server, are the following radically important features currently in php4b1/zend or planned for release soon, or ditched altogether, etc. * compiled script registry, and concerning this, how does it handle included or required files (namely libraries). i guess what i'm asking here is what is the best way to maintain high performance when you really need to require/include more than a couple files...
This would give you the a very noticeable performance gain, assuming the problem with your web site has to do with the compilation overhead (if you're using many includes&requires, as you say you are).
* the optimizer (commercial and separate, but will it be available when php4 is available?). does this optimize one file or the aggregate of the file with requires which can be maintained fully precompiled in the hopefully [to be ] implemented registry (i don't see how you can do this with includes... for that matter, maybe even requires).
Yes, the optimizer is designed to plug in seamlessly into the persistent resistry. We hope to have both the optimizer and persistent registry ready by the time PHP 4.0 is released. They're technically mostly ready. Zeev -- Zeev Suraski <zeev@zend.com> http://www.zend.com/ For a PGP public key, finger bourbon@netvision.net.il
