Ok after i removed the /usr/local/lib/php.ini file (which caused the error
that session.auto_start wasnt enabled in this version) my sites on my test
machines worked perfectly (using redhat 6.0 / apache 1.3.9 / php 4b3 RC3 /
mysql 3.22.22).
One thing i did notice is the higher memory consumption for php4 vs php3 .
On my heaviest php based site (www.reviewboard.com) memory usage per httpd
process went from 3.8 megs per process to 7.1 megs per process. This could
mean potential problems for me @ release time, and stop me from upgrading

Please configure php with --disable-inline. Does that change
the results? Which compiler version did you use?
Also if PHP is configured in debug mode (default with these betas) then PHP uses more memory and is around 20% slower. You can use --disable-debug to compile in release mode.
