GD library has special GD2 format for doing such things (working with
small chunks of very large images), but it can be done with any set of
pngs/gifs. Just ImageCreate all parts, then ImageCreate big image and
ImageCopy all parts on it. Then draw needed data (with ImageString or
ImageTTFText) and output with ImagePNG.
BTW, last version of GD is 1.7.3, so you might consider upgrading.
