For all automake-haters (dislikers :), there is now a chance
to escape the slow and not-very-portable automake Makefiles.
The system requires only a few changes. The only user-visible
changes are that ./configure is faster and that distributions
are about 200KB-300KB smaller (saving of ~20% for .tar.gz).
The magic behind it is that the Makefile.am-to-Makefile.in
step was eliminated, and that all general rules and macros
are kept in one place instead of being put into each
Makefile.
It's not only fast, but it is also portable. I've tested it
so far with all three major make implementations (GNU, BSD,
SysV) and it has worked flawlessly in each case.
Tarballs (.bz2 and .gz) can be downloaded from:

I'd appreciate it, if you could test it with your usual
configuration. Please let me know, if it works for you.
TODO:
- portable dependencies
- making the shared-modules target work
