imagegif() - unsupported with GD-1.3?

I'm using GD-1.3 and configure PHP with
--with-gd=/usr/lib
Configure shows:
checking whether to include GD support... yes (static)
checking for gdImageString16 in -lgd... yes
checking for gdImageColorResolve in -lgd... no
checking for gdImageCreateFromPng in -lgd... no
checking for gdImageCreateFromGif in -lgd... no
After build, phpinfo() reports:
gd
Version between 1.3 and 1.6.1 which supports:
and nothing more.
It seems I can use som image functions (imagecreate(), imagecolorallocate()
etc), but when trying to make a GIF, I get Fatal error: Call to undefined
function: imagegif() .
1) What am I doing wrong?
2) Is this a case of GD 1.3 being to old?
3) If 2) - Does anybody (please!) have gd1.5 source and could provide it?
Boutell won't distribute it anymore, and I need GIF support.
