Install PHP4 without remaking Apache?

Sorry I hate asking "install" questions to this list, but... I've installed PHP3/4 many times but always followed the "README" to rebuild Apache at the same time. But... Can I install PHP4b3 on a Linux server without re-making Apache? (It's a custom Apache that I didn't build. I shouldn't touch it.) THANKS! Derek Sivers linuxbaby@yahoo.com
