Yap,
1. build Apache as usually, but don't forget to add
--enable-module=so --enable-shared=max
which is what you need for the magic to work (mod_so is the module
who handles the loading of other shared modules, php can be one of them)
2. Install Apache; from now on you won't have to touch it's binaries.
3. Build PHP as a dinamic module, namely using Apache's apxs mechanism.
something like:
./configure --with-apxs=/apache_install_dir/path_to_apxs \
--with-whatever \
--disable-debug
so on...
make && make install
4. Make sure `install' modified httpd.conf right, and also
check you have the AddType and the rest.
From now on, everytime you want to install a new version of PHP
you start only from step 3.
Also, if you want to have both PHP3 and PHP4 you need to use
--enable-versioning
when configuring and you'll have them both into your Apache.
Least Sascha Schumann wrote a lot about this on the list, so you'll find
lots
of information on a search.
good luck.
