make error

Anyone seen this before?
After I ./configure; make this is what I get. It just started occuring
today. The vfork seems to be the key but what does it mean?:
All the way up to make[235]
make[235]: Entering directory `/root/php4'
make[236]: Entering directory `/root/php4'
make[236]: vfork: Resource temporarily unavailable
make[236]: Leaving directory `/root/php4'
make[235]: *** [shared] Error 2
make[235]: Leaving directory `/root/php4'
All the way down to make[1]
