Hi Wojak, These things are often a matter of taste. Your design is nice and there are things I like about it. Between the two, I think that the header of prototype.php.net is more 'modern'. Personally, I find your design too gradient heavy. I have been working on a updated mock-up for the home page and I hope to send it around soon. The last attempt to design the home page stalled at the 'we need icons' phase. I now have some icons. If people like them we could move forward again, but, we need help.
I agree with you that it is maybe a bit too gradient heavy. But at the same time I'm afraid that adding new icons will not solve all the problems the prototype in my opinion has, I can point few here: - except the toggle bar, the page has not correct contrast (see the color theory http://www.colorsontheweb.com/colorcontrasts.asp) - there is too much of white area, it is not only a matter of taste, but on some monitors/projectors it might be tiring to look at. - if you open a page, colours that attracts attention are violet (below the main menu) and green (links) and they basically do not fit (http://www.colorsontheweb.com/colorwizard.asp#wizard) I could talk more about it, but probably it is not going to help. So I'm looking forward to see your new mockup, maybe after you have published it the discussion can be more constructive.
I would hope that you could work with the current beta design as it is further along than yours and was generally well liked. In particular, I think it would be great if you could incorporate some of your design ideas into the manual pages.
That is ok, meanwhile I could make some mockups.

Hi, I haven't followed the prototype.php.net implementation from the begining, but from my perspective one of the things it lacks is a new modern look and feel. In stead of criticizeing the current design I have a suggestion how it could look like, have a look at this: http://wojak.u.bitbit.net/20110625.prototype.php.net.tar.gz This design considers the following ideas: - the well known php color space shuld be used - the desing should not introduce any confusion, users should get an impression that the new design is intuitive in relation to what they known from before - the design should introduce the new modern standards of web design The panel below the main menu is expanded, it would behave as it is in prototype now. But basically it does not suggest any new functionality, it is only look and feel, so please consider only the graphic design for now. The sketch is in very early stage, I have many ideas how it could be improved, but I decided to publish it now to make sure this work is needed and it goes to the right direction. So have a look and send back a feedback. Wojak
