And this would be me. :) I'm looking to maybe start contributing to both the website side of things and, if it's open to contributors, the sysadmin side of things.
We definitively need more contributors on both counts. Getting into the sysadmin part however isn't trivial for newcomers.. There is a lot of things that can go wrong (intentional and unintentional), and since we don't quite know you yet we can't really trust you 100% to play around with fragile things like our systems :) But gawd do we need sysadmins!
I entirely understand that I have to earn trust before I'll be given any form of sysadmin-ish tasks - and I'm perfectly fine with that, I just wanted to express some interest in this area, and find out what I should do for now. PHP is a rather huge project -- I'd be scared for the project if you *did* just throw out access ;).
I'm a member of the Fedora Project's core sysadmin team (not sure if using that as a reference does me any good here :P).
It doesn't hurt :) I don't think we have any fedora servers running, but we have some centos I believe.
Ah, cool. Yeah - Fedora's infrastructure is 99.9% RHEL, so I'm not new to RHEL/CentOS, I work with it quite a lot.
I did have one question - is there a web/infrastructure irc channel anywhere, or is the list the primary and preferred method of communication?
We don't have "official" IRC channel, but a bunch of us are on #php.pecl and #php.doc on efnet (were discussions are everything php.net related really).
Just joined those channels :)
The preferred communication method is definitively in the open on the mailinglists, but IRC is always nice for brainstorming, help, quick discussions... There is an internal (one of.. two non-public lists) systems@php.net list (very quiet though). For the web stuff, everything goes through php-webmaster@lists.php.net.
Thanks for any help you can throw me in getting started here. I have already cloned the svn repo of the website and plan to start hacking on/sending patches for the beta site.
Sounds great. I'll give you karma to edit the web namespace on the wiki in the first round. If you want to touch something else, or have any questions or need help, just poke us.
Thank you! :)
I assume you have seen https://wiki.php.net/web/redesign/howtohelp already? And poked around a little in the archives for recent discussions?
Indeed, I have done quite a bit of reading on the wiki, relating to the new site, and I have read a few pages back in the archives. Thanks again, look forward to getting involved here :)
