5.2.17 was the last release in the 5.2 series, released earlier this year.
A good chunk of our mirrors run 5.3, but it has extremely hard for us
to force the 100+ volunteers to keep up, especially since many of them
run stock PHP from various 3rd party repositories.
If you search hard enough, you will even see some running 5.1.6 as
that apparently is the only "supported version" by some stupid linux
distributions.
The website itself doesn't actually care, and it works flawlessly with
PHP4.3.0, and probably even earlier.
It also works just fine with the current 5.4.0alpha (there is one
mirror running it..).
We are pretty well aware of the changes in PHP and possible issues old
versions can cause.
As noted in our mirroring guidelines (http://php.net/mirroring) we
prefer if mirror maintainers run 5.3, but we have very little control
over it :(
