Russ, et al (top-posted for the benefit of those not receiving
this from the mailing list);
The PHP lists are not an appropriate venue to air your grievances
with script developers, web hosts, and/or technical support. However,
in a brief response to the thread you've copied to everyone, here's
the summary:
PHP 5.2.8 is not "compatible" with PHP4. They are two different
versions of the same language. You are all saying the same thing, but
things are being lost in semantics. The statement "PHP5 is compatible
with PHP4" is tantamount to saying "Windows XP is compatible with
Windows 3.11 For Workgroups."
However, the majority of *scripts written in the era of PHP4* are
compatible with PHP5. And, while some scripts targeted for PHP5 may
not work on a system running PHP4, a great portion of them will as
well, thanks to what's called "backward-compatibility," or BC.
From here on, please understand that this is an issue that should
be handled between you, the script author, your web host, and those
directly involved in the process, and all future correspondence should
be directed only to those entities. The PHP Group cannot assist you
further in this matter.
Thank you.
