I think the problems are > MySQL > based and nothing to do with PHP Um....just a question here, but what's your definition of "load"? MySQL support in PHP doesn't mean that when PHP starts, MySQL automatically fires up. You need to manually start the mysqld so that it's running and PHP has something to connect to, when you tell it to (mysql_connect()) open dos console, cd to c:\mysql\bin\ (or wherever), type mysqld --standalone (or mysqld-shareware --standalone) MySQL is now all started up and ready for PHP (or anything else) to connect to it. Loading a DLL just adds additional support for items, into PHP. For example, you won't be able to use Image Creation functions until you load the php_gd.dll. It has nothing to do with starting an external program. However, that's moot since MySQL (and ODBC and PCRE and a bunch o' others) are already built into the Distributed build of PHP4 for Windows. The first chapter of my PHP Fast & Easy book is devoted to getting MySQL up on Windows (and Linux). Chapter 2 is Apache, Chapter 3 is PHP. I've got Chapters 2 and 3 smushed into installation tutorials at www.thickbook.com/extra/ but if this MySQL thing keeps being such a common problem among users, I'll probably take that chapter and make it a tutorial as well. Are people really having this much trouble? This is an honest question. Is it because the MySQL docs are light on the windows subject, or the PHP docs? Or both? - julie +------------------------------------------------+ | Julie Meloni (jcm@i2ii.com) | | Tech.
