Julie I think I am getting warmer to having it all working correctly. Firstly answering your question, "load" in my case means going to c:\mysql\bin and typing "mysqld-shareware --standalone". Something is happening by the noise the HD makes for about 2 secs. Also the phpinfo page is working again though the logos have now disappeared (minor problem in the circumstances). To check it's loaded, I press the ctl-alt-del which brings up a dialog box and Mysql-shareware is happily sitting in there at the bottom. I am not having much luck with phpmyadmin which I was going to use to create the databases and tables. All I get is a blank screen so I'll have to play around with the settings and see what happens on that. Overall I am finding Apache + PHP + MySQL + Windows 98 quite a bit different from that of the Linux equivalent I used about 4 months ago. I thought that it would be quite similar to what I am doing now but trying to simply transfer acquired skills is more of a hinderance than a help !! As I remember with Linux (correct me as I may be wrong), it was a simple matter of editing "httpd.conf" file to get the MySQL daemon to load automatically when I fired up the Apache Server. Whatever I did, I know it all worked virtually first time as I followed instructions. In Windows, it all seems a little thrown together (not your fault). For instance, what is the point of putting a reference php_mysql.dll in php.ini if it's not needed ? Not exactly rocket science just to create a text file relevant to version 4. I will check out your book though I have not seen it at my local book store.
