For general knowlege... my php4.0.2dev and oracle connection are working. My
answers to Mark's questions follow.

WinNT SP 4 (i belive, though it might be sp5... only see it on boot everyday -
duh!)
Oracle 8.1.6 Client installation (on webserver) - BUT I define my service name
using 8.0 compatibility (may be important to getting this whole thing working)

Remote database server via TCP/IP. Server Oracle Version (get version number
via SQLPlus):
Oracle Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production
> 3. What webserver (probably irrelevant) are you using
Most definitely NOT irrelevant, as each server has a different API (if you're
not running in CGI mode :))
Apache 1.3.12 running PHP4.0.2dev (compiled by napp) as CGI.
> 4. What environment variables have you got set?
I have the default registry entries created by Oracle 8.1.6 client install, as
well as having my oracle client bin directory in my system path
(c:\oracle\ora81\bin, by default). Having the bin directory in the path is
important for Apache/PHP to locate the necessary dlls for php_oci8.
In Apache's httpd.conf, I've also added a single line to set my oracle home
directory:
SetEnv ORACLE_HOME "c:/oracle/ora81"

Yes, I use the SID alias in my ocilogon call:
$conn =
ocilogon("<myusername>","<mypassword>","<mysid>");
And no, I don't have any other environment variables set... no TNS_ADMIN, no
SID, no TWO_TASK... nothing but the ORACLE_HOME set in Apache and the SID
specified in the ocilogon call.

If the ODBC calls are working, then this definitely points towards some
unhappiness between php_oci8 and the oracle client.
Also, remember that you should be using ONLY the oci dlls which are included in
your 8.1.6 client install... Don't use anyone else's DLLs, as they might cause
more problems than you want :)
Hope this helps others.
