OK, but I'm also stuck with an IIS server (due to a third party "Web
Enabling Solution" ... let's hear votes for Access v. MySQL in this
environment...
I don't mind learning the "hard" stuff... but I don't want to screw myself
either... I originally got into the whole PHP because of a MySQL/PHP driven
site, so I have nothing against MySQL unless it's a compatability issue...

this is not true. MySQL is a installable programm like every other
win32-App,
with an easy documentation.
The most important thing is this:
windows don't reflect the current internet-webserver, so if you do local
development,
you must emulate the internet/unix solution as good as possible. This can
only be done
via apache1.3.12 with php3/4 and mysql (or another often used
internet-Sql-Base), even
if you are learning php/database progamming. It is not a good idea if you
use access
connected with php for learning (cause you can't use this combo on
real-life-server),
try learning the "hard" way, it worth the energy you put into.
