PHP4 kills IIS4.0

I spent most of yesterday trying to install PHP4 on a Winnt 4.0 box running IIS
4.0.
After configuring IIS to use the php4isapi.dll ISAPI filter IIS would not
restart.
I cold booted the machine and it still would not start either automatically or
manually.
Removing the ISAPI filter allowed IIS to start.
Anybody know what I can do to fix this problem?
