John,
This is a classic "Im not a DBA but..."
The only time i've seen problems with this is when your backup scripts dont
close the connections but wait for all connections to close... this isnt the
ideal situation for a backup script. Your scripts need to be more aggressive
about closing connections (i've seen installs were some desktop DB browsing
tools leave hanging connections, you cant have backups waiting on everyone.)
Also im not very sure you need to shutdown the DB to do backups. We have a
system here were several levels of backups are taken and the DB never goes
down. The system implimented here allows us to go back to any point in time
at any point in time.
Sad to say it has been used... a massive job was run in the production
enviromnet when it shouldnt have been.. once it was worked out what had
happed we restored the data to a minute before the job was run and recreated
the other "lost" transactions... much better than having to go back to the
backup from the midnight before, and losing a days worth of work for approx
100 people...
BTW: How are you finding Oracle and NT and PHP? I've a client who would like
to go that way (from the current unix solution) for more internal ownership.
What web server and PHP are you using? How do you go about remotely
administering the box? and do you find yourself rebooting it? Restarting
your webserver or anything nasty like that? Any other quirks i should be
aware of?
Thanks
mn

Subject: Oracle Persistent Logon - Question about Logging off
I've greatly increased the search speed of a search utility I'm using in
Oracle by using OCIPLogon... it's lightning now! BUT
I'm not sure if the webserver is ever logging off of the database... (this
will be a problem during our DLT backups every night...) how can I check?
I have a line that runs an OCILogoff on the connection, but the next search
screen doesn't take nearly as long to log on...
Order of events:
Added OCIPLogon to search form page (which is the same as the search results
page)
-----logon took a while
Ran the search and got the results back almost immediately
went back to the search form page
-----logon took almost no time (yes I cleared the cache on my local machine)
----------
So I'm just worried about the webserver ALWAYS being connected to this
database and am not sure how to check if the connection is ending after the
end of the search...
Thanks in advanve,
John
