Newline is not working !

I guess this must really qualify as stupid but this is my first day in PHP. I have PHP4 on NT Workstatation and PWS. Using PHPEd as my editor. When I say something as elementary as this in my php page <? echo "This is a php test\n" ; $var = "This is a string\n\n" ; echo $var ; ?> The newline doesn't work when I view the page in a browser. I am using IE 5.0 and NN 4.7 Newlines however do work when I run the php file throo PHPEd.
