\n not working with mail()

Hi
I'm using PHP 4.0.2 Module for win32.
when trying to use mail() if I include line feeds in any part of the email
ie. extra headers, message body etc.. I keep getting Server error in my
page.
If I remove \n or replace them with \r it works.
I've never come across this before with older versions of PHP.
Has anyone else suffered from this who can help me out.
