system() function

I really need some information regarding the PHP system function. I am trying to finish off my project which is a Unix shell for a web browser and I only have a limited amount of Unix commands available to the user when they type in the desired command. Please tell me how I can use the system function in my project to read information in form the user, store it in a file and display it on the console/browser for the user to see!
