Hi, recently I've written a small lua extension, far from being complete. Since Marcelo also started with a similar extension we'd like to continue working together. If you don't know what lua is: | Lua is a powerful, fast, light-weight, embeddable scripting language. | | Lua combines simple procedural syntax with powerful data description | constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua | is dynamically typed, runs by interpreting bytecode for a | register-based virtual machine, and has automatic memory management | with incremental garbage collection, making it ideal for | configuration, scripting, and rapid prototyping. | | 'Lua' means 'moon' in Portuguese and is pronounced LOO-ah.
Sidenote: Lua is a great language (I love it) and I am very happy to see it embedded in PHP. Thanks a lot for this initiative :) It will make all sort of things possible, like for example allowing people to write addons/plugins for websites that would run in a secure sandbox. Great !
how fast can the lua "engine" be started up?
I have no idea yet, I will have to test. Outside of PHP, it outperforms everything I have seen. Lua has a very small footprint and was designed from the beginning to be embedded. The source code archive is only 200Kb, the compiled binary on my machine is 150Kb. It is also very fast <http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/gp4/lua.php> . I think performance should be good but overhead added by sandoxes can slow it down quite a bit. The PECL extension seems very basic at the moment, I still have to give it a try. -- Bertrand Mansion Mamasam Tel : +33 1 48 89 88 26 http://www.mamasam.com
