The make install problem has been fixed in CVS.
Does the solution Marko suggested in previous comment work?

Well, -liconv is missing from that link line, and according
to your previous error, it was missing earlier as well.
Linking with g++ seemed to solve all the C++ -related
problems.
So, try to configure again with --with-iconv=/usr/local
(but without specifying CC=g++ or anything). Then compile,
and again replace gcc with g++ on the last link line.

I did yesterday morning as one of several attempts. Sorry, I should
have reported it here. That causes the make install to fail. I did
report the make install problem on the 17th. That was a result of the
iconv option.

I would guess that the g++ problem also breaks the configure
and the iconv checks fail. OTOH, you didn't specify
--with-iconv=/usr/local in your configure line either..
Check the config.log for the iconv checks.

OK, I think I know what you want now. I went into the
/tmp/php4-200206171200 directory and issued the following command:
/bin/sh libtool --silent --mode=link g++ -export-dynamic -DPHP_ATOM_INC

What I got back was:
Undefined first referenced
symbol in file
libiconv /usr/local/lib/libsablot.so
libiconv_open /usr/local/lib/libsablot.so
libiconv_close /usr/local/lib/libsablot.so
ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to
sapi/cli/php
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
So I went to verify libiconv and this is what I found:
bash-2.05# ls -l /usr/local/lib/libiconv*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 695 Jun 9 00:05
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 17 Jun 9 00:05
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.so -> libiconv.so.2.0.4
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 17 Jun 9 00:05
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.2 -> libiconv.so.2.0.4
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root other 900391 Jun 9 00:05
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.2.0.4
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root other 900792 Jun 9 00:05
/usr/local/lib/libiconv_plug.so
It seems to be that PHP can not find something that Sabcmd is able to
find just fine, and is in the same directory as the libsablot.so file.
Part of the command was:
-I/usr/local/include
so there is not excuse for not finding the link it was looking for.
