Ignore "[14 May 2:12pm CDT] brianlee at ica dot net" I'm not sure what
it is thats busted but I did some trial and error removing some of my
origional ./configure options down to ./configure
--with-pgsql=/usr/local/pgsql --disable-cgi I don't get the origional
error anymore I get "make: *** [sapi/cli/php] Error 1" which really
dosen't say much.

I tried it with rm config.cache && ./configure --disable-all
--disable-cgi passes "make" have yet to do a "make install" with that
configure line I have reason to believe my gd lib might be busted? If
anyone has a set of online instruction to compile/install gdlib
specifically for Mac OS X 10.2.6 please fire me an email.

leaving marked open.
compiler is standard issue apple distro. Although version 1161 works
fine on my system here locally. I'll try to look into it in another
week or so...

Nevermind, I had same compiler and it works fine.
Can you try this configure line:
# rm config.cache && ./configure --disable-all --disable-cgi

Could it be anyway possible for you to try some more stable version of
gcc? Like some version starting with 3.2...
