Michael,
Cross posting is rarely required especially not when asking a PHP and DB
question. It just clutters these lists. php-db is the place for Oracle
questions though you will find some Windows specific help on php-windows.
Anyway your questions in order...
1. PHP uses the Oracle client to either natively connect or through ODBC.
Take your pick
2. It can be ODBC on Windows if you wish. But this wouldnt save you the
trouble of installing and configuring the Oracle client (its required for
ODBC). So ODBC is more work to configure and is slower.
3. No
4. You need to go to technet.oracle.com id recomend the latest Ora 8.1.6 for
windows. You will need to download the whole thing unfortunatly. (200Mb i
think)
5. Yes
6. Yes... what exactly do you need?
Im assuming you are a windows user (ODBC ref's) i would recommend you go to
www.php4win.de and download their PHP binaries. Note that this will only
work with the 8.1.x client, but you can use this client to connect to remote
7 and 8 DB's. On windows save your time compiling and download the HUGE
oracle install instead. (NB: I think it is NT4 / Win2000 only.. you may be
able to do a client only on Windows9x but i wouldnt know.)

Hi,
How does PHP interface with oracle. I mean, is it an ODBC
connection? Does PHP have to be located on the same server as the database?
Where do you get the libraries when compiling PHP? Can it connect to a
remote Oracle database? Anyone have any information on this?
