[i really need to get that tutorial published!]
You will need to install Oracle 8i client on your linux box, as php needs
the client libraries for the OCI functions to work. You'll then be able to
connect to any 7.x or 8.x database using OCI. Note that if you're running
apache, you'll need two SetEnv's in your httpd.conf file: TNS_ADMIN and
ORACLE_HOME. Both of these varables need to be pointing to a LOCAL drive,
as apache doesn't allow a remote tnsnames.ora file due to security
reasons, it seems.
Note that I'm writing a quick tutorial for NT/windoze users for getting
Oracle and PHP running [it is more difficult in windoze], and I'll e.mail
this list and php-windows with the URL when it is ready.
