Oracle 8i client installer requires Xwindows due to it being JAVA
based. I'm afraid there's no other way. You might want to install a slim X
Window Manager and then deinstall it after 8i client is installed.
Also, as Rasmus pointed out, an Oracle 8i "client install" doesn't include
all the needed libraries. From installing 8i 5 times on my NT workstation,
I can definitely attest to that. You need to do a custom install to make
sure you get OCI functions [and it's also a good idea to install SQL Plus
so you can test your connection].
A good rule of thumb is that if you can connect to your Oracle server with
SQL Plus, you'll be able to connect with PHP4.
