Oracle can be a pain to use, but then you get yourself some nice Quest
Software utilities for managing your Oracle database, and everything ends
up nice in the end. ;-)
I've been using Informix and MySQL a lot longer than Oracle, and have been
happy with both. If you having speed problems, Informix might be a cheaper
alternative than Oracle, as I used to use it [an old version - 4.10] at a
library which had over a million records, but only about 150-200
concurrent users and the speed was amazing [this was running AIX 3.2.5].
I wouldn't recommend postgres if MySQL is slow for you - I don't think
postgres would give you much improvement [but it is a free db, so it might
be worth a try].
YMMV,
