We use Sybase here, and it works great. Oracle is just too expensive, and
PostgreSQL might not be much better than MySQL with the problems you are
facing.
We use Sybase on NT, but I am sure the Linux version would be better, I'm
not sure. We have some absolutely HUGE sites (ie a 1Gig database, 10-100,000
users) and Sybase
stays up fine. (IIS craches all the time...)
Oracle is even better than Sybase (of course, it's Oracle :) but you can pay
between 30,000 and 300,000
dollars for the big baby, and it's a pain to use.
