Actually, ODBC does not need SQL*Net. This is one of those myths I keep my
eyes open for :) True, there are some ODBC drivers that piggyback on
SQL*Net or other native layers, but by design that is not how ODBC
functions. ODBC should speak directly to the CLI of the database, bypassing
SQL*Net, and avoiding both the performance hit of an additional layer and
the need to configure a client connectivity layer specific to database.
