I think there's a place for different database abstraction layers under the
sun. Some can be quite simple - abstracting the methods for accessing databases
and looping query result. Others can have added functionality like schema
management, data-validation and more (Like Manuel Lemos's Metabase - my personal
favorite).
Each user can choose his abstraction layer according to his/her needs (or even
per projects needs, no need to restrict yourself).
I like having many choices in project development, it allows me to find the
best solution, instead of using just what you have.
