Since when? From the gcc man page:
-shared
Produce a shared object which can then be linked with
other objects to form an executable. Only a few systems
support this option.
And yes, Linux is one of those "few". Sounds like you need to upgrade
your gcc and also your Apache. Apache-1.3.9 is the latest and has this
gcc -shared fix.
