I disagree.
MS will never embrace CORBA, so that makes CORBA face a significant uphill
battle. DCOM is not open. There is a need for an open alternative.
MS got an early start with SOAP, but IBM participated in the 1.1 spec and
got an open source implementation out to xml.apache.org. In fact, we got
our open source implementation out before MS did! ;-)
Because we did this in Java, we have Sun bought in.
I do believe that it is possible for Apache and open source to beat MS at
their own game.

P.S. When all is said and done, Beating MS, or IBM or Sun for that matter
doesn't make your product a winner. Solving somebody's problem, being
open, and playing well with others does. Soap is just a protocol - and if
it can be used to communicate with servers built using COM++ as well as
other servers built using EJBs then so much the better.
