I think it does not have that much to do with globals. It´s a class variable belonging to that class and if instanciated, it´s initializer too.

Currently it should work like this ($var:: isn´t allowed anyway at the moment), but I think Kristian thought of that it should not work this way, just like $this or $object if object would be an object, sounds good to me.

You do instanciate them generally, but if you don´t want to you needn´t, to access their properties...
