So.. to sum up:
A) <form action="url?extradata=yup" method=post> is legal, but ill
supported by CGI programs, and <form action="url?extradata=yup" method=get>
is legal, but not supported at all by netscape 4.x.
B) <form . . . . ><input type=hidden name="extradata" value="yup">
... more
form</form> will break Javascript that accesses the form fields, but is well
supported by CGI programs, and older browsers alike.
C) <form . . . . >...form stuff<input type=hidden name="extradata"
value="yup"></form> won't break 99.5% of javascript code.. and is well
supported by all browsers, and all cgi programs.
Option C) seems like the best solution to me.

ps. to whomever rewrote the url_scanner.c: that is *beautiful*. I never
thought I'd see finite state stuff outside of class.
