First, "missing some rarely-used functionality" and "worth nothing" spell differently. Second, ideas are welcome. Your idea of remembering all
sorry, it was meant contextual, it´s worth nothing working with references, because if you can´t watch its properties or which variable it equals, well, I don´t see any reason to dump it at all then...
variable name path does not look appealing to me, but you are welcome to propose more or give arguments (real ones, not "it would be worth nothing without it" type arguments) for it. Or convincing someone (perhaps yourself) to do it the way you like. If it would really work, I won't even think of implementing it my way :)
I don´t know why your way and my way would be that different, if you´ve found a mechanism to visit a variable once and then encountering another reference and you´re able to decide to cut the display off then, well, I think you should now then which variable it was you already visited, otherwise I did not understand your logic discovering which ones have already been visited and which ones not...

AL>> AL>> point 2) that mechanism could be resued in serialization of references I Yes, it might be. As soon as I find a good way to point *which* variable we are referencing (pointers don't work in serializing). Maybe I'll just assign an ID to every variable tree "leaf" and will print referenced IDs. Better ideas are welcome.
That seems quite logical, if it´s possible to determine which variables are the same (reference each other), you could replace them all with a certain ID, then you can var_dump() normally instead you´re printing IDs where references and referenced variables (keeping in mind that it´s the same) would appear otherwise, below that output you could display the IDs with their values and perhaps again containing some IDs if beeing circular... -- o----------0-¬---------O-·---¬----o---®-----o o O ° . | http://www.kiffen.de | pRoteçt y0ur bRaín |0 O ° ¤ ° · 0°·³°²'²³-¹'³´³°^°³~³²³°'³²²¨³²^³¹³²°²³`³º³°Þ ° o © ° . · | psychedelic experience | gott@kiffen.de | O ° o ° o-¬--o--0-----©-·--O-----o-----0-¤----------o 0 ° · ° . ¤ ·
