IMO there shouldn't be ANY extensions enabled by default.
If someone wants to use some extension (extension = something that
extends the core system) they usually (?) know whether or not it is
installed in their systems.
And gd-library is just one extension amongst others, isn't it?
There are also numerous bug reports which are caused by having mysql
enabled by default and not having path (for example) which causes
conflicts with other Apache modules which use mysql.
I would like to have an reasonable explanation why there are these two
extensions (mysql & gd) enabled by default?
