As the patch tries to solve this and leaves th ebehaviour for iso-8859-1 it does not break anything but enables usage with other charsets.Search for "htmlentities charset". Both myself and thies (and probably others were discussing this). In short: there are many, many, many people who have scripts that rely on htmlentities defaulting to iso-8859-1 (the documented default for ever). With the patch, ISO 8859-1 is default still. Therefore, I don't see problems. Do you see any problems other than this?
Also from my point of view no entity conversion is needed. But i want my charset info back. See following email. marcusPlease no automatic entity conversion for phpinfo(), it's for debugging. i.e. It does not need 100% conformance to standards to be useful...I'm going to read archives more carefully, though I think even handling the charset in phpinfo() will yield the same discussion in the future. This is a separate issue and nothing to do with changing the behaviour of htmlentities().
