Variables not sent

I have the following form:
$form = "<form action=\"submit_entry.php\" method=\"post\">
<table width=\"50%\" border=\"0\" align=\"center\">
<tr>

<td><input type=\"text\" name=\"subject\"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Main Entry: </td>

echo $form;
I have done it like this a thousand times before, but for some reason
nothing is being passed to the action page (submit_entry.php). Please help,
this is driving me nuts.
