It seems like you've done all the right things if you have ended up with
a php executable - as you have done, you just need to call configure
with the appropriate flags.
And in fact you are not the only one who has been having problems with
the CGI version - I have been monitoring a thread here today from others
who have similar problems, apparently with PHP cgi and Apache, and I
have ongoing problems with PHP version 4.
I am not using apache, and thus far haven't reported the problem here;
I'm liaising with the server developer in the first instance to try and
see what differences the server sees between 3 and 4.
