I haven't tried all of this together, but I think it might work...
Create an animated image of a status bar, say with 15 segments that
increments every two seconds and a page like this:
<?
Ignore_User_Abort; # However this works...
?>

Your transaction is being processed.

Please wait...

<?
flush();
# Process the credit card
# Send confirming email
?>
The credit card was <?=$CCStatus?>

If they hit stop, they don't see if it worked, but they still get the
email. The phony status bar takes 30 seconds no matter what is realy
happening, but hopefully it will keep them occupied for longer than the
actual transaction takes.
Make sure you close any
s you start before the flush(). Some
browsers won't paint any of a table till it parses the whole thing.
